Amritsar to UK passengers made to pay 20,000-pound 'ransom': Reports

Vienna:  UK news sites are reporting on how 180 passengers headed from Amritsar to the UK had to pay 20,000 pounds after their airline said it would not continue the journey till they paid up.

Austrian airline Comtel Air had stopped in Vienna to refuel over the weekend.  The two pilots then allegedly said the plane would not take off till the money was handed over, and that the airline had run out of money to buy fuel.  The Guardian on its website quotes passengers saying that they were escorted to ATMs to withdraw cash. The passengers returned to Birmingham on Tuesday night.

The airline has said it will investigate the allegations. Bhupinder Kandra, Director of passenger services for Comtel Air, told the BBC: "I have heard what happened, it shouldn't have happened, and I will investigate why it happened....the people who had to pay the money will receive a refund."

Comtel Air began operating low-cost flights between Birmingham and Amritsar last month.
