Congress gears up for UP; Rahul Gandhi to kickstart campaign from Phoolpur

Delhi:  Rahul Gandhi and the Congress have switched into high gear for their electoral campaign for the Uttar Pradesh polls to be held in next year. On the 14th of November  - Jawaharlal Nehru's birth anniversary - his great grandson Rahul Gandhi will kickstart the party's poll campaign from Phoolpur, which was Nehru's constituency.

Rahul Gandhi has already been travelling extensively through Uttar Pradesh from Varanasi to Jaunpur and Chandauli where he has been meeting community leaders that form the core of the Congress vote bank - Dalits and Muslims.

Rahul's transition from a general secretary handling the party's student wing National Student Union of India (NSUI) and the Youth Congress, to a bigger role in the party's affairs, has been talked about ever since his mother Sonia Gandhi went to the US for her surgery.  Senior leader Digvijaya Singh fuelled reports further when he recently told reporters, "I feel now he (Rahul) has to look after us all. But when pressed, Singh was evasive saying, "These are all party-related matters. So let the party president decide." (Read: Rahul has to now 'look after us all', says Digvijaya Singh)

While Sonia Gandhi has come back to her daily routine sooner than expected after her illness, overseeing the selection of candidates for the Uttar Pradesh elections, party insiders feel a change at the helm may be just what the UPA needs. They feel it could resuscitate the government from what the Opposition has been calling "governance paralysis."
