NEW DELHI: The Delhi high court has granted anticipatory bail to an IT professional suspected of burning alive the fiancee of her former lover nearly a month ago in Pune.
Justice Mukta Gupta on Friday granted the relief to Anushree Kundra, who is apprehending arrest by the Maharashtra police. Kundra had approached HC, arguing that she is not involved in the case. The court then stayed her arrest for the next four days and asked the Delhi resident to appear before the court concerned in Pune once this period is over.
Kundra, an IT professional, has been accused of murdering 26-year-old Juhi Prasad, a Delhi lawyer and a relative of BJP leader Rajiv Pratap Rudy, on October 13 in Pune. The charred body of Juhi was found under mysterious circumstances at her fiance's rented flat in Pune's Salunkhe Vihar.
Nimesh Sinha, reportedly Kundra's former lover who later got engaged with the victim, survived with minor burn injuries, the police said. The accused was allegedly angry after hearing about Sinha's engagement to Juhi and went to his Pune residence where she entered into a verbal duel with Juhi and Sinha. Later, she allegedly set the couple on fire while they were asleep, the police said.
Juhi suffered more than 90% burns and succumbed to her injuries in hospital while Nimesh, who suffered 10 to 15% burns, was discharged after treatment. In her bail application, Kundra claims it was she who was targeted but managed to flee. Claiming that she has now been implicated, Kundra's lawyer also alleged that Sinha wanted to kill both Kundra and Prasad to remove both women from his life.
The case, which was investigated by the local unit of the Pune police, was later transferred to the crime branch. Kundra approached HC and filed the bail application through her lawyer on Thursday.
The police see it as a love triangle that has gone wrong. Investigations have revealed that Kundra from Delhi was in a relationship with Patna-based Sinha. The duo then stayed together in Gurgaon and later Pune while working as software professionals. However, Sinha's parents were opposed to their relationship and got him engaged with Prasad. The crime branch of Delhi Police said they are monitoring the situation and are in touch with the Pune police.
"If she does not show up in Pune after the specified period, we will arrest her. We have activated our sources and are presently working on a few leads," said a senior crime branch officer.
