Verdict on 2002 Sardarpura riot case likely today












Ahmedabad:  A court in Ahmedabad is expected to give its verdict today in a Gujarat riots case - the Sardarpura killings - where 31 people were burnt alive by a mob in Mehsana on the night of March 1, 2002.

A mob of around 1500 people had allegedly attacked the minority locality of shaikh vaas where around 20 families lived. Fearing for their life, people ran away and around 100 persons took shelter in a house.

The crowd allegedly locked the house and burnt alive 33 persons. 31 died on the spot and two died in hospital later.

In all, 73 persons are facing trial in the case; eight of them are in jail and the rest are out on bail. The prosecution has examined around 112 witnesses in the case.
