Ice blocks help pandas stay cool in heat wave

China:  Giant pandas at the Chengdu Breeding and Research Centre, in China's Sichuan province, have been having fun cooling down with huge blocks of ice, as a summer heat wave made their thick fur too hot to handle.

Gaza militants renew attacks despite ceasefire agreement with Israel


Jerusalem: 
Palestinian militants in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip fired rockets and mortars into southern Israel on Monday, despite an unofficial truce meant to defuse days of escalating violence.

The Israeli military said 15 projectiles were launched at Israel overnight, most of which fell in open fields, and no injuries were reported. Israel retaliated with an airstrike before midnight Sunday that targeted a rocket-launching device.

'I am not worried' about security, says Syria's President


Beirut:  Syria's President said on Sunday he was "not worried" about security in his country and warned against any foreign military intervention in a speech designed to portray confidence as the regime comes under blistering international condemnation for its crackdown on dissent.

Gaddafi son reported arrested by rebels is free


Tripoli, Libya:  Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's son and one-time heir apparent, who was reported arrested by rebels on Sunday when they advanced on the capital Tripoli, is free.

Seif al-Islam turned up early on Tuesday morning at the Rixos hotel, where about 30 foreign journalists are staying in Tripoli under the close watch of regime minders. He then took reporters in a convoy of black, armoured SUVs on a drive through parts of the city under the regime's control.

112-year-old former Army man wishes to join Hazare's fast

Banaskantha, Gujarat:  A 112-year-old ex-Army man has come out in support for Anna Hazare in the fight against corruption. He also wishes to fast with the 74-year-old Gandhian.

Ranchhod Desai, a veteran foot tracker from Limbala village in Gujarat's Vav district, had served in the Indian Army in the 1965 and 1971 wars with Pakistan.

New Delhi:  Anna Hazare's fast has entered the 8th day and doctors say he is weak, though not in danger. The 74-year-old Gandhian has lost six kilos since his hunger strike began on Tuesday last and this is not lost on a government now accelerating efforts to seek a compromise solution. This, sources say, could even include giving in to demand that the PM be brought under the purview of the Lok Pal.

New Delhi:  Doctors say Anna Hazare is weak but not in critical condition on the eighth day of his fast against corruption. At the Ramlila Maidan in Delhi this morning, after a long weekend which saw thousands of people joining Anna's camp, there was a smaller audience today- about 4000 people at 10.30 am. Anna is no longer able to deliver his customary morning and evening speeches to the crowds.

Srinagar:  A woman has been killed and another civilian was injured in the crossfire when the Army's ambush party fired at the suspected militants in the Hafruda forest area of Kupwara district in north Kashmir.

New Delhi:  It's the seventh day of his fast today and social activist Anna Hazare has lost 5 kilograms. Doctors, however, said Mr Hazare is fine.

25,000 people at Anna camp; no intent to destabilise govt, says his team












New Delhi:  Anna Hazare has lost five kilos since his hunger strike began last Monday; by noon today, a national holiday for Janmashtami, there were 25,000 people gathered at his base camp at Ramlila Maidan; and supporters of the anti-corruption activist say they have not received any formal proposal from the government for a discussion.
