35 yrs after UP govt acquired his land, farmer moves HC


A farmer from Gautam Buddh Nagar district, whose land was acquired by Uttar Pradesh government by invoking the urgency clause 35 years ago, today moved the Allahabad High Court challenging the acquisition proceedings.

Prakash Jha moves SC to lift ban on 'Aarakshan'
NEW DELHI: Film producer Prakash Jha on Friday moved the Supreme Court to lift the ban on his film 'Aarakshan' in states of UP, Punjab and Andhra Pradesh. 

Jha in his writ petition said that the ban on 'Aarakshan' goes against the spirit of freedom of expression guaranteed by the Constitution, advocate Ameet Naik told the TOI.

The matter is scheduled to come up for hearing at 2:00pm today.

According to PTI report, Jha, who held a press conference in Mumbai on Friday, said he was ready to make minor changes in the film, respecting concerns voiced by different political bodies.

Film producer Prakash Jha on Friday moved the Supreme Court seeking its direction to lift the ban imposed on the release of his film 'Aarakshan' in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh.
Counsel for Jha mentioned the petition before a bench headed by Justice Altamas Kabir seeking urgent hearing of his plea as the film is scheduled to hit the screens on Friday.

3 Pakistani men killed in riot-hit Birmingham


London:  Grieving relatives and friends of two men killed in the early hours of Wednesday in what some claimed was "a racist attack" gathered at a Mosque in Birmingham to pay their respects.

Two brothers and a friend were killed when a car was driven at them when they were in a petrol station.

Their relative Nasser Kahn, who gave the names of the brothers as Shazad Ali, 29, and Abdul Musavir, 30, spoke out on Wednesday, calling it a racist attack.

Birmingham:  Police launched a murder investigation on Wednesday into the deaths of three men hit by a car in the English city of Birmingham.

Residents said the dead men, aged 21 to 31, were members of Birmingham's South Asian communities who had been patrolling their neighbourhood to keep it safe from looters in the aftermath of riots.

Twin blasts in Peshawar, 4 cops killed


Peshawar, Pakistan:  A remote-controlled bomb exploded near a police vehicle in northwestern Pakistan on Thursday, killing 5 people and wounding dozens. Four police officers were among the dead.

The blast occurred in the Lahori gate area of the city of Peshawar.

Man sprays poison in neighbour's home

Mumbai:  A 40-year-old carpenter in Santacruz, Mumbai, has been arrested for allegedly poisoning his neighbours by spraying toxic gas into their house following his quarrel with them.

According to the Santacruz police, Babulal Mistry, a resident of the municipality's Gajodhar Baug, returned to his locality intoxicated on Tuesday night and picked a fight with his neighbour Hiralal Balkeshwar (46), who lives with his brother Anthony Swami (49) and son Shivbhujan (16).

ATM security guard shoots into ground, 4 injured

Bangalore:  Four people sustained minor shrapnel injuries when the security guard of a private bank ATM fired four rounds of bullets into the ground. The incident happened during a heated argument with a newspaper supplier in Mahadevapura here on Wednesday morning, police said.

Man, father commit suicide after murdering wife for dowry

Bangalore:  A 24-year-old housewife was allegedly smothered to death by her husband in the K R Puram area of the city. The man then went on to kill himself, the police said.

Anusha, a housewife, had been married to Vinay Kumar (26) for just a year and was being harassed by her father-in-law and husband for dowry, police said, quoting a complaint lodged by Anusha's father.

New Delhi:  In a bizarre incident reported on Tuesday, a man was arrested for allegedly opening fire on his wife. The victim, however, claimed that her husband did not shoot her.

According to the statement given by the victim, Sangeeta, she was having dinner with her husband Madan Lal alias Badal when a stray bullet hit her on the palm, then the temple and finally got lodged in her nape. The incident took place around 9pm in the Sabji Mandi area of north Delhi. 

50-year-old commits suicide over sleeping disorder

New Delhi:  Depressed over his sleeping disorder, a 50-year-old business man allegedly committed suicide on Wednesday morning in his residence in upscale Greater Kailash-II, police said.

Kulbeer Singh shot himself with his .32 bore pistol at around 8 a.m.

Mother strangles 6-year-old, commits suicide


Delhi:  A 32-year-old mentally disturbed woman allegedly strangled her six-year-old daughter and then committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling in the Surajmal Vihar area of east Delhi on Tuesday. 

A police official said the deceased were identified as Sangeeta Pokhriyal and her daughter Vrinda. He said Sangeeta's husband Hemant works as a junior engineer in a private company. He had gone to Rajasthan on a business trip when the incident took place.

A B.Com second-year student of Satyawati College of Delhi University (DU) was allegedly held hostage and molested on August 6 by two security guards of the institute inside her classroom, after they found her in a compromising position with a male friend.

Delhi:  A 58-year-old renowned businessman of the Capital allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his licensed pistol at his residence in Greater Kailash area of southeast Delhi on Wednesday morning. The police have seized the weapon.

Petrol pump staff beaten for telling man to await turn


Pune:  Like on any other day, an employee at a petrol pump on the Pashan-Sus road in Bavdhan was just doing his duty when he told a man to await his turn for a bottle of petrol. 

Little did he know that this request would leave him and other workers in the petrol pump battered.  Some six miscreants beat up employees of the Shinde petrol pump around 8.15 pm on Monday for refusing to serve one of them immediately.

Pune police firing: Magisterial probe ordered


Pune:  The situation in Maval in Pune is peaceful and under control, a day after three persons was killed there in the police firing when a farmers' protest against a dam water pipeline project turned violent.

A magisterial inquiry had been ordered into the firing, District Collector Vikas Deshmukh said.

Pune:  On camera, a group of policemen, many in anti-riot gear and armed with weapons and sticks, charge down a road; one fires from his revolver. Then, a cop goes to the edge of the road, takes aim at people running helter skelter beyond and fires. He looks for another vantage point and fires again. More policemen gather around and throw stones at the people running.   
Policemen are also seen venting rage at a stationary vehicle on the road. Cop after cop smashes the car.
