Kudankulam N-plant protests temporarily called off for civic polls















Kudankulam:  In a major relief to stranded employees of the Kudankulam nuclear power plant in Tamil Nadu, villagers protesting against the project have temporarily called off their agitation for smooth conduct of the civic polls on Monday.

A month after quake, Sikkim gears up for a tough winter ahead












Gangtok:  It is nearly a month since an earthquake measuring 6.9 in the Richter scale struck Sikkim bringing death and destruction to strategically located state on the India-China border. Reconstruction and rebuilding process is on but key military positions and villages along the Indo-China border are still cut off.

Telangana crisis: Bandh today, rail roko called off












Hyderabad:  Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS)-led groups have cancelled the rail rokoplanned for today and instead opted for a full-fledged bandh in the Telangana districts.

As part of the bandh, state transport buses that started running on Sunday after staying off the road for nearly a month will be back inside the depot. The Chief Minister has instructed private schools to reopen but with buses and autos off the road, it is unlikely that children will be able to attend school.

PM to leave for Pretoria today; global economy, security on agenda


New Delhi:  Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will embark on a visit to Pretoria on Monday to attend the trilateral India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) summit that is expected to be dominated by pressing global issues like the difficult economic scenario and security situation.

Ahmedabad Sessions Court grants bail to Sanjiv Bhatt












Ahmedabad:  A sessions court in Ahmedabad has granted bail to Gujarat IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt.

The 1988-batch IPS officer who has alleged that Chief Minister Narendra Modi gave illegal orders to go slow on rioters at a law and order meeting on February 27, 2002, was arrested on September 30 for allegedly coercing a junior officer to back his claims. During the arguments over the bail hearing the public prosecutor had claimed that Bhatt had forced junior officer K D Panth to file a false affidavit.

Coal India workers union threaten three day strike over pay revision












The Coal India workers union are threatening to go on a three day strike. Coal India accounts for over 80 percent of domestic coal production. The strike could aggravate shortage of coal supplies to power plants. Over 40 power stations have coal stocks of less than a week.

Telangana bandh, but schools open, buses on road












Hyderabad:  Activists have cancelled a rail roko plan and called for a complete shut-down of the Telangana region today. But early on Monday, public transport is running and many schools are open.

No relook at Right To Information Act, says Salman Khurshid












New Delhi:  Amid a raging debate on the Right To Information (RTI) Act, Union Law Minister Salman Khurshid has made it clear that there is no proposal for a "relook" at the Act but noted that not only the government but the judiciary too had experienced "difficulties" because of it.

Parliamentary panel considers Constitutional Amendment Bill on Lokpal













New Delhi:  A move to grant constitutional status to Lokpal has gained momentum with a Parliamentary
Committee considering a draft legislation to this effect with a provision which will not require ratification by states.

Telangana: Govt toughens stand on Day 2 of rail roko agitation














Hyderabad:  On Day 2 of the rail roko agitation called by pro-Telangana groups in Andhra Pradesh, the state government has toughened its stand and imposed prohibitory orders till October 26 in Hyderabad. Schools have also been warned if they don't reopen tomorrow, they will be derecognised.
