Telangana bandh, but schools open, buses on road

Hyderabad:  Activists have cancelled a rail roko plan and called for a complete shut-down of the Telangana region today. But early on Monday, public transport is running and many schools are open.

This despite the state government revising an earlier ultimatum to schools to remain open from today or face derecognition; Expecting buses and autorickshaws to be off the road as a result of the bandh call, the government had told schools they would need to remain open from Tuesday on. The Chief Minister had earlier sent a stern order to schools to remain open from Monday or face action.

The pro-Telangana groups, led by the Telangana Rashtriya Samiti (TRS), want a separate Telangana state carved out of Andhra Pradesh and have been protesting for over a month now. This has hit students, with schools in the region, that includes Andhra Pradesh capital Hyderabad, remaining closed for days as a result of the protests and bandh calls.

The activists had earlier planned to continue a rail roko on Monday, but changed that to a call for a total bandh in Telangana districts after stringent police action forced them to hold fewer protests at railway stations.

Train services, however, remained largely paralysed over the weekend as the railway authorities had already cancelled or diverted many trains.

State transport buses drove out of their depots only on Sunday after staying off the road for nearly a month.

The government has imposed Section 144 in Hyderabad till Diwali on October 26.
