Facebook finetunes news feeds from friends


















Facebook on Tuesday began rolling out the latest in a rapid-fire series of enhancements to the leading social network as nascent rival Google+ opened its membership to the world.

Facebook's "News Feed" that streams updates from friends will give priority to important posts, images shared at the website will be displayed larger, and a "Ticker" chat column is being added for real-time conversations.

Google+ opens up to all comers


















Google on Tuesday opened its invitation-only social network, Google+, to anyone who wants to join at google.com/+.

Google+ emphasizes privacy -- like easily sharing with select groups of siblings or colleagues -- and features like a video chat service called Hangouts. For Google, it is a way to fend off Facebook, which has been attracting users and advertisers, and gain social data to use to improve other Google services like search.

HTC unveils new smartphone, the Rhyme


















Taiwan's HTC unveiled a smartphone called the Rhyme on Tuesday which features a blinking "charm" that attaches to a bag to let a user know if they have received a call or a message.

The Android-powered Rhyme will go on sale in the United States on September 29. It will cost $199 and will be available through Verizon Wireless.

Chanel files Internet trademark lawsuit in Vegas




















Chanel Inc. has filed a sweeping cyberpiracy and trademark infringement lawsuit in Las Vegas against 399 websites it accuses of selling counterfeit items bearing the luxury retailer's trademark.

The civil lawsuit filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Nevada seeks unspecified damages from unnamed operators of websites that the New York-based company says operate from China, the Bahamas or other overseas jurisdictions with lax trademark enforcement systems.

Apple's CEO Tim Cook might unveil the iPhone 5 on October 4, reports All Things Digital. Rumour mills have been hard at work these past few months suggesting the launch of the device towards the end of 2011.

Man dupes jeweller to fund divorce case


New Delhi:  A divorce can be a messy and costly affair. And sometimes unsuspecting people get dragged in for no fault of their's. 

In an incident reported from Chanakyapuri area, a man was nabbed by the police for cheating a jeweller and making off valuables worth two lakh rupees. The accused took the idea from a Bollywood flick, as he needed money to hire a lawyer to fight a divorce case filed by his wife and to repay debt that he had taken from his landlord and friends. But he landed into police net after they approached his wife, who informed the cops about his possible hideout. Additional commissioner of police, KC Dwivedi said the accused, identified as Vishal was then arrested and interrogated by officers.

New Delhi:  Unable to bear the death of her brother in a road accident, a 23-year-old girl committed suicide here by consuming poison, police said Tuesday.

IIT experts to help cut noise near Delhi airport












New Delhi:  The central government on Wednesday informed the Delhi High Court that it has sought help from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) experts to reduce the noise level near the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport here.

Two die in Delhi wall collapse












New Delhi:  Two labourers died after a wall collapsed in South Delhi on Wednesday, police said.

The incident took place at around 3.25 pm at C-4 Panchsheel Park. The wall which was under construction collapsed, leaving two dead and one injured.

Karnataka Lokayukta's resignation accepted by Governor












Bangalore:  Karnataka Governor HR Bhardwaj on Tuesday accepted the resignation of Justice Shivaraj V Patil. Mr Patil had resigned from the post of the state's Lokayukta yesterday.

Mr Patil quit barely a month after he was appointed the ombudsman of Karnataka. His resignation has reportedly been prompted by reports that his wife and he own three plots of land in Bangalore in violation of city laws.   The Lokayukta's office is required to investigate land scams - some of which involve high-profile politicians.

IIM student commits suicide amid disturbing Facebook messages














Bangalore:  With 727 friends on Facebook, Malini Murmu was like any other college student who logged on often to the social network.

On Sunday, however, Malini found that her boyfriend, who she had fought with earlier that day, had posted a hurtful message.  In his status update, Abhishek Dhan, who had graduated from IIT Roorkee, declared that he had "dumped" his girlfriend.

Father-son duo facing cases commit suicide in lawyer's chamber



Amritsar:  A man and his son, facing a number of cases allegedly committed suicide in the chamber of their lawyer in the District Court Complex here, police said on Wednesday.

Rajesh Gupta and his minor son Sajjan were allegedly involved in more than 35 criminal cases of cheating, looting and fraud.

Mumbai civic workers call off strike












Mumbai:  Employees of Mumbai's civic body called off their strike Tuesday evening after Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan assured them to look into their demand for pay hike.

Over a lakh members of the Municipal Mazdoor Union, who are employees at Mumbai's Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), had gone on an indefinite strike since midnight Tuesday, demanding a salary hike as per the Sixth Pay Commission's recommendations.

61-year-old woman murders 'friend' for money, arrested



Mumbai:  Police on Wednesday claimed to have cracked the murder case of a 55-year-old woman with the arrest of her neighbourhood "friend", who is a senior citizen.

Latika Kamble was found dead in her residence in suburban Vikhroli last Friday and some valuables were also stolen.
