Man who extorted money from filmmaker Rakesh Roshan gets bail













Mumbai:  A Sessions court on Thursday released on bail a man who was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on charges of extorting money from filmmaker Rakesh Roshan.

Lucknow:  A Class 9 student shot at his schoolmate over a trivial dispute in a Uttar Pradesh town, police said Thursday. The victim is battling for life at a hospital while the attacker has run away.

New Delhi:  After the Rs. 3 per litre hike in petrol prices today, middle-income households may have to shell out more for domestic cooking gas. 

The government will consider a proposal of capping the number of subsidised LPG cylinders to households. An Empowered Group of Ministers (EGOM) will meet tomorrow under the chairmanship of Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

Ahmedabad:  On his 61st birthday, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi will begin a fast that's scheduled to last 72 hours. The agenda, he declared in an open letter earlier this week, is to "strengthen Gujarat's environment of peace, unity and harmony." Mr Modi also waxed eloquent about what he describes as "the unhealthy environment created by the unfounded and false allegations made against me and Government of Gujarat, after 2002 riots."

The fight between rival factions of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church is now spilling onto the streets. The bone of contention is the ancient church in Kolencherry, which both warring Orthodox and Jacobite factions claim as theirs. The trouble has become worse, after a recent court order, which handed over control of the church to the Orthodox group. 

One in five students in Maharashtra's Nanded district do not exist













Nanded:  It's an alarming trend. Despite Rs.27,000 being spent on education by the Mahrashtra government, the money, it seems, is not translating into better educational facilities for the students. Instead, in the Nanded district of Maharashtra, schools are getting fake students to show bigger numbers. In fact, in many schools here, one out of five students, exist only on paper.

The ban on Indian actress Nikhita Thukral from Kannada language films, because of an alleged affair with another actor, has been overturned.
The Kannada Film Producers' Association imposed the three-year ban earlier this week, saying Ms Thukral had spoiled the "domestic harmony of a fellow actor".

The Kannada Film Producers Association has decided to lift the 3-year ban imposed on Nikitha following widespread protests from the film fraternity, women’s group and social activists.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Sentiment at Asia's top companies fell in the third quarter, hitting its lowest since the fourth quarter of 2009 as uncertainty about the global economy and rising costs weighed, a Reuters survey showed.
