Naxal attack leaves 11 Chattisgarh policemen dead

Raipur:  At least 11 policemen were reported killed today in an attack by Naxals in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, officials said.

A police team was ambushed by the Maoists in the Metlaperu village forests of the Bhadrakali police station area in the district this evening.

Bill Gates wishes Murthy as he retires from Infosys


Bangalore:  India's iconic figure N.R. Narayana Murthy was wished by Microsoft founder Bill Gates late on Friday as he retired from Infosys Ltd that he co-founded three decades ago with just Rs.10,000.

Billionaire Gates called up Murthy from Seattle in the US where his global software major is headquartered and tele-wished him the very best in his future endeavours.

New Delhi:  It's the second day of Anna Hazare's fast at the Ramlila Maidan in Delhi. The 74-year-old Gandhian launched his 15-day mass-protest against corruption from here on Friday after a massive roadshow. Thousands of his supporters gathered to show solidarity with him yesterday, and many more are expected to join him over the weekend.

CPI-M politburo member M.K. Pandhe dies


New Delhi:  Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) politburo member and chief of its trade union arm CITU, M.K Pandhe died at the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital here a little after midnight on Friday following a cardiac arrest, party sources said. He was 86.

New Delhi:  Devotional songs and anti-corruption slogans reverberated in Ramlila ground as social activist Anna Hazare's fast entered its fifth day on Saturday.

Even as the Gandhian was not on stage by 9 a.m., his supporters began the day by forming groups and singing songs. While many were still sleeping, volunteers began distributing water, tea and biscuits.

Manpreet claims support of US, Canada NRIs


CHANDIGARH: People's Party of Punjab founder Manpreet Badal on Friday claimed that majority of Punjabi NRIs abroad would support him in the forthcoming assembly elections in the state.
Badal, who was on a 16-day "goodwill trip" to US and Canada, said on his return to Chandigarh that around one lakh NRIs would visit Punjab to support him during elections even though most of them didn't have the right to vote.

Maoist ambush kills nine cops















Raipur, Aug. 19: Over 120 Maoists today laid an ambush in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region and killed nine police jawans in a landmine blast followed by heavy firing.
An hour after the 4.30pm encounter, the rebels launched a second ambush on a rescue party of 45 jawans. This time, four Maoists were gunned down.

Communist Party of India-Marxist polit bureau member M.K. Pandhe died of cardiac arrest at a hospital here in the wee hours on Saturday.
Mr. Pandhe, 86, died at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital at 12:30 a.m.
Mr. Pandhe was admitted to the hospital last night after he complained of chest pain.

A day after the Rajya Sabha voted for his impeachment, Justice Soumitra Sen of the Calcutta High Court on Friday said he would move the Supreme Court if the Lok Sabha also decided on his ouster and ruled out his resignation.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) cracked down on the businesses owned by YSR Congress president Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy and the companies that invested in his firms by conducting extensive searches in six cities across the country simultaneously on Thursday.

Jagan conspired with YSR in granting favours: CBI


New Delhi: CNN-IBN has accessed the FIR report filed by the CBI against Congress MP Jagan Mohan Reddy. It alleges that the Kadapa MP conspired with his father the late YS Rajasekhara Reddy and other individuals and companies to "cheat the government of Andhra Pradesh in the matter of granting certain favours".
The FIR also alleges that Jagan exercised influence on YSR and other government officials, who issued orders favourable to many companies and that rules were flouted to allot licences for ports, SEZs in return of huge sums of money during 2004-2009.
In its FIR in the case related to Jagan, a copy of which was filed in a special court, the CBI charged that he "exercised his influence on his (late) father, then chief minister, and also "unknown public servants" of the state government, who in turn abused their official positions by corrupt or illegal means and issued orders favourable to many companies.
The charges relate to criminal conspiracy, cheating, criminal breach of trust, falsification of accounts and criminal misconduct, according to the FIR.

Fight will continue, even if I’m not alive: Anna



Anna Hazare, who on Friday morning moved out of the Tihar Jail to continue his fast at the Ramlila Maidan, received unprecedented support from the masses at a historic rally. The crowd of hundreds gathered outside Tihar swelled to thousands as he travelled on an open vehicle, with just a canopy to protect him from a sudden downpour.
