Giving voice to many of his party colleagues, Congress MP Sandeep Dikshit on Friday went public, disagreeing with the arrest of Anna Hazare on August 16 shortly before he was to start his indefinite fast on Lokpal Bill.
“Delhi Police perhaps over-reacted by arresting him and the magistrate should not have sent him to Tihar jail. The government did a good thing by realising this mistake and releasing him,” Dikshit told The Indian Express. Asked if he was in favour of Anna being allowed to go ahead with his fast, the East Delhi MP clarified, “No. I believe they could have negotiated further and after he was detained, he should have been released. Arresting him in those circumstances was not a mature step. It is the maturity of our government that it stepped in and got him released.”
Earlier, some MPs had met senior party leaders to express their disagreement with Hazare’s arrest. They were said to have taken the stand that the government should not be seen as throttling the democratic right to protest.
