One in five students in Maharashtra's Nanded district do not exist

Nanded:  It's an alarming trend. Despite Rs.27,000 being spent on education by the Mahrashtra government, the money, it seems, is not translating into better educational facilities for the students. Instead, in the Nanded district of Maharashtra, schools are getting fake students to show bigger numbers. In fact, in many schools here, one out of five students, exist only on paper.

The government's findings seems to corroborate this trend. During a recent student survey in Nanded district, the survey found that as many as 1.4 lakh students of the seven lakh enrolled were bogus. According to Prithviraj Chavan, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, ''The survey found that there was a tendency to inflate the numbers. So if the survey was held the next day, then pupils would be called in from neighbouring schools or villages just to make up the numbers. I think the estimated excess students is about 20 percent.''

The result of the survey's findings has caused the Maharashtra government to now planning a survey across the state.

The results of the survey are alarming. Government sources say of the Rs. 27,000 crore budgetary provision of the school education department, most of the funds are spent on mid-day meals, salaries, uniforms and stationery. And if there are no students to avail of these facilities, then clearly money is being siphoned off.

The sources also add that the state-wide numbers could be much higher given that government and aided schools get huge funds from the government. Obviously the more the number of students, the higher the funds allocated.
