35 yrs after UP govt acquired his land, farmer moves HC

A farmer from Gautam Buddh Nagar district, whose land was acquired by Uttar Pradesh government by invoking the urgency clause 35 years ago, today moved the Allahabad High Court challenging the acquisition proceedings.

The petitioner alleged that while the land owners were given a "nominal" compensation, Noida authorities had started selling plots which had remained vacant for more than three decades for a handsome price to private builders.
The petitioner, Liley Ram, is a resident of Suthiana village of Gautam Buddh Nagar and owned 33 acres of land at Chaura Salatpur village which now stands spread across Sectors 32 and 25-A of Noida.
The land was acquired by the state government's notifications dated 1.6.1976 and 16.9.1976 through which acquisition of a total of 1600 acres, belonging to several farmers, was effected.
The petitioner has submitted the government had invoked the urgency clause "without any tangible urgency" while claiming that the land was needed for "planned industrial development of Noida" and he was given compensation at the "nominal" rate of Rs 6 per square yard.
