Man smashes wife's head in front of kids

Lakshmi, now deceased
Mumbai:  An alcoholic 46-year-old man from Ghatkopar has fled after crushing his wife's head with a rock in the wee hours of Wednesday; this is the third gruesome incident of children being unfortunate witnesses to their mothers' murders in the city in a fortnight.

Duraiswami Arjun, who is an alcoholic, is absconding after killing his wife in a fit of rage at his house in Santosh Nagar, Ghatkopar.

"Arjun, who works as a drain cleaner, is a habitual drunkard and would often get into fights with his wife after consuming liquor," said Vinay Kakade, senior police inspector, Dindoshi police station.

"He often stayed away from home for prolonged periods after drinking sessions, which was one of the major reasons for fights between the couple."

Domestic fight
According to the police, Arjun had returned home on Wednesday after having gone missing since Sunday. Lakshmi, who works as domestic help, got into a fight with him about this and Arjun left the house in a huff.

He returned a couple of hours later with a rock and, when Lakshmi answered the door, he smashed her head in the presence of their twin sons, Ram and Laxman (13).

The boys caught him as he was trying to flee, but he slapped them and left.

"Arjun got scared when he saw Lakshmi bleeding profusely and tried to make a run for it. His teenaged sons caught him but he slapped them, pushed them away and left," said a police officer.

The boys then went to their elder sister, who is married, to tell her about the incident. The sister alerted the neighbours and Lakshmi was rushed to the Bhagwati Hospital, where she was declared dead before admission.

"Arjun has been charged under Section 302 (Murder) of the IPC. A manhunt has been launched for him," said Inspector Kakade.

Shocked and Scarred
According to psychologists, kids get affected very badly and can even lose their mental balance if they witness the murder of a loved one.

Sangeeta Kale, a child specialist, said, "After witnessing such gruesome crimes, kids immediately go into shock and develop a fever.

Such children need immediate care, treatment and counselling so that they do not develop mental problems."

Psychiatrist Harish Shetty said, "Such incidents scar the child like small marks on a deflated balloon. The marks grow manifold when the balloon is inflated and so do the bad memories.

A child who has witnessed such a thing should immediately be taken for counselling, which should be carried on for a sustained period."

Earlier
July 28: A 31-year-old woman was found dead in her Andheri (East) apartment. According to the MIDC police, Aruna Pandey was killed by robbers in front of her son Himanshu (12).

July 28: A 35-year-old man beheaded his wife over a domestic quarrel and then murdered his two-year-old daughter, who was witness to her mother's killing.

When the neighbours saw blood flowing out of the door and began banging the apartment door, the murderer answered the door holding his wife's head in his hand.
