Delhi: A 32-year-old mentally disturbed woman allegedly strangled her six-year-old daughter and then committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling in the Surajmal Vihar area of east Delhi on Tuesday.
A police official said the deceased were identified as Sangeeta Pokhriyal and her daughter Vrinda. He said Sangeeta's husband Hemant works as a junior engineer in a private company. He had gone to Rajasthan on a business trip when the incident took place.
"Sangeeta was sleeping with Vrinda while her elder son was sleeping with his grandfather. In the morning, the family members found the bodies and called police," said an official.
The family further claimed that Sangeeta was mentally disturbed and was undergoing treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences for the last two years.
"Sangeeta was found hanging from the ceiling fan while Vrinda bore multiple strangulation marks around her neck. Police rushed them to the GTB hospital but they were declared dead on arrival," said the police official.
Police are speculating on whether a family feud might have triggered the incident.
