Police stop "gay" party in Mumbai, participants fined

Mumbai:  City police stopped a "gay" party that was being held in a bungalow of suburban Versova last night, in which at least 130 guests, including Bollywood actor Bobby Darling, took part.

Police have also imposed a fine of Rs 1,200 on each participant for the alleged indecent behaviour.

The police action came following complaints of loud music being played around 1 am at the suburban Versova's Spanish Villa bungalow, where the party was being held. The bungalow is usually rented for film shootings, police said.

"When our teams reached the spot, the guests, who are males, were found behaving indecently, following which, they were brought to the police station and fined Rs 1,200 each under section 110 of the Bombay Police Act," D K Rupwate, senior inspector at Oshiwara police station, told reporters.

He added that they were later allowed to go.

The same amount of fine was collected from two organisers of the party for organising the party and serving liquor without prior permission, police said.

"I was invited to the party by one of my friends saying it was his birthday party. I went there as a celebrity guest for the party, for which, I charged him. I did not know it was a gay party," Bobby Darling told reporters.

"Later, I learnt that the permission for the party was not taken. And I did not behave indecently...I went to police station after the request of the cops and signed on the papers when they asked me to do so. I did not pay any fine but the party organisers must have paid the fine on my behalf," Bobby said.

According to police sources, the tickets costing Rs 450 each were sold online and text messages were sent for the "gay" party.

Police sources said that when the party was stopped, the guests expressed their anger saying that the police action only came because it was a gay gathering.
