Team Anna gives Uttarakhand a big thumbs up

Dehra Dun:  Anna Hazare's close aides have congratulated the Uttarakhand government for introducing a historic Lokpal Bill to combat corruption among government servants.

Activist Arvind Kejriwal who has emerged as one of the principal faces of the India Against Corruption campaign said that Uttarakhand has introduced such a comprehensive law that the Centre should use it as a reference point.

"This bill passed by the assembly has certain clauses that require the central government's approval before the bill becomes effective in the state of Uttarakhand," said Team Anna in a press release. "What would be most unfortunate and an affront to the people of India would be any attempt to dilute the bill passed in Uttarakhand."

Anna and his aides have asked the government to pass the Lokpal Bill in the winter session of Parliament which begins on November 21. The bill provides for a new ombudsman agency that will investigate complaints of corruption among bureaucrats and politicians.

The 77-page bill passed unanimously by the Uttarakhand Assembly last night applies to the Chief Minister, senior ministers and all bureaucrats. The union government has so far opposed giving the Lokpal jurisdiction over the Prime Minister's office and junior bureaucrats.

Uttarakhand is scheduled to vote for its next government in the next few months, and the Lokpal Bill that has been passed here is being seen as a shrewd move by the BJP government to cash in on the national support that Anna and his team have galvanized with their campaign.

In this state, the last chief minister Nishank Pokhriyal was replaced with BC Khanduri just months ago after he was accused of corruption.
