The filing of nomination papers for the student union election in Harimohan Ghose College gave rise to violence in Kolkata.
KOLKATA: A sub-inspector was killed in a violence that erupted in Harimohan Ghose College in Kolkata over the filing of nomination papers for the student union elections between the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (the student wing of Trinamool Congress) and Chhatra Parishad (the student wing of Congress).
The sub-inspector named Tapas Chowdhry, a part of the Special Branch of the city police, was shot at from close range during the violence.
V S Nesakumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Port Division was quoted by The Hindu as saying, “There were clashes between two groups as a result of which bullets were fired and bombs hurled. A sub- inspector was injured and now we have learnt that he has succumbed to his injuries."
The Deputy Commissioner further revealed that the fight broke out between the two parties contesting the elections.
A large police force was later summoned to the site of violence, which injured at least two, outside the Harimohan Ghose College.
The Hindu quoted the State’s Urban Development Minister and local MLA Firhad Hakim as saying that the violence broke out mainly due to the anti-social elements associated with the Congress were responsible for the firing, while denying that the clash between two student groups was responsible for the violence.
Asserting that the administration will take strong action against the culprits, he added that already two persons have been arrested in connection with the incident.
Hakim's allegations were, however, refuted by State Congress president Pradip Bhattacharya, adding that the law and order in West Bengal was deteriorating and sought centre's intervention in this case.
