New Delhi: Suresh Kalmadi has been told once again that he cannot leave Tihar Jail to attend parliament when the House is in session.
The Delhi High Court has rejected today the latest request by the Congress Lok Sabha MP from Pune. "In view of the gravity of the offence and the huge magnitude, it would be totally inappropriate to grant him permission ...on the foundation that he has to meet the Constitutional obligation. The writ petition is dismissed," said the two judges hearing Mr Kalmadi's appeal.
A few weeks ago, Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw, had said that by insisting that he needs to be in parliament to fulfil his duties to his constituency, Mr Kalmadi was trying to" get fresh air outside the prison". The judge had also wryly observed that the government would not fall if Mr Kalmadi did not attend parliament. "There is no such important issue going to take place in parliament that if you (Kalmadi) do not attend the session then the government will fall,"
Mr Kalmadi, who is 67, was arrested in April this year for corruption. He was the Chairman of the Organizing Committee for the Commonwealth Games which were held in Delhi in September.
Mr Kalmadi and several of his aides have been accused of granting contracts to companies who quoted the highest prices for equipment and other services hired for the Games.
