Tamil Nadu: 3 die in police firing in Ramanathapuram












Madurai:  Three people died when the police opened fire after being attacked by a mob in Tamil Nadu's Ramanathapuram district today.

According to reports, Trouble began when police arrested John Pandian, a dalit leader, in a bid to prevent him from attending the birth anniversary of a late dalit leader. Soon after the arrest, a mob attacked the police at Paramakudi, injuring several policemen including a Deputy Commissioner of Police.

A few police vehicles were also torched. Police say they had no option but to open fire.

Protest also spread to adjoining district. Two people were injured in police firing in Madurai.

Condemning the violence, chief minister Jayalalithaa announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to the kin of the three killed. 

"The police opened fire in self-defence and to protect public property. The mob attacked the police, threw petrol bombs and torched police vehicles," she said.
