Sheila Dikshit orders inspection of fire safety measures in hospitals

Delhi:  In the wake of the devastating fire at a Kolkata hospital, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Saturday has ordered the fire department to carry out a detailed inspection of fire safety standards in all hospitals, cinema halls, auditoriums and other important buildings.

Dikshit also directed the fire department to submit an interim report for her perusal based on the inspection so that precautionary steps could be taken immediately.

"A detailed inspection programme is being chalked out for a detailed inspection of fire safety measures in hospitals, cinema halls and other important buildings following the directive of the Chief Minister," officials said.

They said Dikshit asked top officials of the fire department to keep fire-fighting appliances functional and provide the latest training to fire fighters.

She said the government will provide additional funds to ensure that all fire stations are fully equipped to meet any eventuality.

Asking the department to take the fire incident in Kolkata as a wake-up call, Dikshit said any shortcomings found during inspection must be taken seriously.

The government had yesterday decided to upgrade fire safety measures in 37 hospitals run by it most of which do not have the mandatory NOC from the fire department.

Dikshit issued the directives from a private hospital where she was admitted on Monday following viral fever. She is likely to be released on Sunday.
