As Congress MPs from the Telangana region made it clear that they would not participate in the Parliament session commencing from August 1 unless the Centre took some concrete action on the Statehood issue, party seniors from the region has conveyed to Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad that there was no question of compromising on Hyderabad and it should be the capital of the new Telangana State.
The leaders who went in a 14-member delegation — this includes former Ministers, MPs, MLAs and MLC — made a power-point on Hyderabad and the irrigation system to Mr. Azad, who is in charge of party affairs in Andhra Pradesh and is authorised by the Congress leadership to hold a consultation process on Telangana. Mr. Azad told them that he would consult the leaders of Seemandhra and get back to them.
The former Minister, R. Damodar Reddy, said Hyderabad was inter-wined with the people of Telangana, and its culture, history and tradition would justify why it should continue to remain part of Telangana. He told Mr. Azad that while the Seemandhra region had so many big cities like Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Tirupati and Guntur for selection of a new capital; for the Telangana region Hyderabad was the only big city and it should not be taken away or made a Union territory.
While Pedapally MP G. Vivekanand made the presentation, Information Technology Minister Ponnala Laxmaiah gave a detailed report on how Telangana, which was mainly dependent on bore-wells for irrigation, had no major irrigation projects despite various committees' suggestion in its favour. If Hyderabad was given to Telangana as the capital, people would be happy and both the regions – Telangana and Seemandhra – would flourish.
BJP team meets again
Meanwhile, the BJP delegation from Andhra Pradesh, led by its State president Bandaru Dattatreya, continued its meetings for the second day on Wednesday and called on leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj and leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley to take up the Telangana issue in the coming Parliament session and urge the UPA government to immediately table the Bill on separate State formation.
