RR Patil orders probe into pilgrim mishap

MUMBAI: Home minister RR Patil on Wednesday announced a high-level probe into the road tragedy and the subsequent police firing on a crowd, which turned violent after a mishap at the Ambad-Jalna road in Marathwada recently.

The inquiry will be conducted by a retired high court judge, Patil said in the state assembly. He said this in a discussion on an adjournment motion on the mishap. The motion was moved by leader of the Opposition in the assembly, Eknath Khadse, and others. The issue was also raised in the legislative council by leader of the Opposition, Pandurang Phundkar.

Action will be taken not only against the driver, who was drunk, but also against his employer, Patil said.

Khadse ( BJP)) and Subhash Desai (Shiv Sena) criticized the police action. Both demanded a judicial inquiry. Khadse called for an action-taken report. Pravin Darekar (MNS) asked for the suspension of the district collector and SP.

The home minister said the retired judge in charge of the probe will be asked to offer suggestions on the security arrangements for pilgrims on the road. Pointing out that official compensation is not paid to the victims in road rage cases, Patil said in this case, financial assistance will be given to the relatives of those who died. The state will bear the medical expenses of those injured. "We will also talk to insurance companies to see if 'warkaris' can be brought under insurance cover."

Patil said as the crowd had turned violent, cops had to open fire as the last resort.
