Cash-for-votes: No bail for Amar Singh today

New Delhi:  Politician Amar Singh, currently at AIIMS, has not been granted bail. Mr Singh, who is a Rajya Sabha MP, was arrested last week and moved to Tihar Jail. His lawyers have said that a kidney transplant last year puts him at great risk for medical infection, and that he should get bail for health reasons.

The judge hearing his case today said that she wants to examine detailed medical records that will be filed by AIIMS, the hospital where Mr Singh was moved last night after he complained of pain in his kidney.

He has been arrested for allegedly trying to bribe three MPs in 2008 to support Dr Manmohan Singh in a trust vote.  At the time, Mr Singh was with the Samajwadi Party.  He has been charged with giving the MPs -all from the BJP - one crore as an advance in return for their abstention during the trust vote, which Dr Singh eventually survived.

The trio of BJPs walked into the Lok Sabha hours before the vote began on July 22, 2008, waving bundles of notes. Two middlemen who allegedly liasoned between them and Mr Singh have also been arrested in what's known as the cash-for-votes scam.
