IAEA declares Fukushima reactors stable

The damaged Japanese Fukushima power plant has achieved a stable condition, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Yukiya Amano, declared Monday, six months after the nuclear accident.

The Japanese IAEA chief added that the current plan by Tokyo Electric Power Co to bring Fukushima fully under control by lowering the reactor’s temperatures by January is realistic.
“The agency’s assessment now is that the reactors are essentially stable and the expectation is that the cold shutdown of all the reactors will be achieved as planned,” he said at a regular meeting of the IAEA board.
The Fukushima Daiichi power station has leaked radioactivity since it was crippled by a massive earthquake and tsunami on March 11.
