PM's letter is thrown into the dustbin, says upset Supreme Court

Delhi:  The Supreme Court today expressed its concern over states failing to follow the Prime Minister's order to set up special courts to deal with cases being investigated by the CBI.

Eight states including Delhi, Gujarat, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh - were declared defaulters for ignoring the instructions issued by the Prime Minister in 2009.  Dr Manmohan Singh had said that special courts should be set up for cases of corruption that are handled by the CBI.  Many of these involve politicians and bureaucrats.

The Supreme Court suggested that could explain the lack of action. "The majority of cases taken up by special courts involves cases of  public servants. The Prime Minister's letter is thrown into the dustbin. It is an unfortunate scenario that only under the threat of contempt they (states) take decisions," said a two judge bench hearing the case.

They added that it the duty of Chief Secretaries in states to take administrative decisions " but they do not take decisions on such important issues."

71 special CBI courts were sanctioned by the Centre across the country to deal specially with graft cases.

The Delhi government said that currently, 19 CBI courts in the capital are dealing with 1,042 cases.
