Ranchi: Seven persons, including a five-year-old boy, were killed when Maoists attacked the convoy of former Jharkhand Speaker and MP Inder Singh Namdhari on Saturday. Mr Namdhari escaped unhurt.
According to the police, the Maoists attacked Mr Namdhari's convoy between Garu and Lalbhar in Jharkhand. A bus in the vicinity also came under Maoist fire, killing the boy. An 18-year-old girl, who was injured in the cross firing, is fighting for her life in a hospital.
Bodies of six policemen have been recovered; one policeman is missing.
The attack took place when the MP was returning from a function at Mahuatand, Inspector General of Police (Operation) R K Malik said.
Mr Namdhari said his escort vehicle was caught in the blast but his car was able to speed away.
The attack comes during a week which is being celebrated by the Maoists as the 11th anniversary of raising of the Peoples' Liberation Guerilla Army (PLGA). Expecting violence, the government had issued a warning to the Maoist-affected states. The PLGA, on the other hand, had asked its cadre to step on the recruitment and attacks.
