New Delhi Chennai: It's a homecoming that DMK chief M Karunanidhi has been eagerly waiting for. After being released from jail, his daughter Kanimozhi will reach Chennai today.
The DMK MP left Delhi for Chennai at around 9:45 this morning. She is scheduled to reach Chennai at around 1:30 pm. Karunanidhi will receive her at the airport.
"It is a very happy feeling for me to be going to Chennai. But more than the bail, it is important for me and the others to prove our innocence," she said while leaving for Chennai.
Karunanidhi has already arrived at the airport. Apart from him, other members of the DMK first family - like MK Stalin, his sister and his mother - and hundreds of DMK supporters are waiting there to greet Kanimozhi.
Kanimozhi walked out of the Tihar Jail on November 29 after the Delhi High Court granted her bail. Dressed in a pink salwaar-kameez and clutching onto a bouquet of flowers, she spent her first night at home after nearly six months. She was arrested on May 20 for her alleged role in the telecom scam. After four earlier unsuccessful attempts, she was granted bail by the Delhi High Court.
Senior party leaders like TR Baalu were there to help her settle in.
Her party, the DMK, is already suggesting that Kanimozhi be conferred with some sort of martyr status.
"She has shown great will power... she deserves an important post in the party", said DMK MP Vasanthi Stanley, who was at Kanimozhi's residence when she arrived home.
Kanimozhi is accused of allowing a TV channel co-owned by her to serve as the landing place for a 214-crore kickback that was paid to her partyman, A Raja, when he was Telecom Minister. Fourteen people including Kanimozhi are on trial for the telecom scam. Eleven people have so far been released on bail.
