Andhra: Deletion of clause triggers war of words

HYDERABAD: The deletion of Clause 14 (f) from the Presidential Order on employment zones triggered a war of words between Congress leaders from the Telangana and Seemandhra regions on Saturday.

Nellore Rural MLA Anam Vivekananda Reddy remarked that the deletion of the clause was a small issue in comparison with the sacrifices made by Seemandhra people to keep the state united. "I am an integrationist. We should be prepared for greater sacrifices to keep the state united. If a person knowingly or unknowingly asks for an elephant (implying Telangana statehood demand) then he should be satisfied by offering him a toy elephant (deletion of clause 14(f). The persons who are offering or receiving it (elephant) cannot bear the burden. If we (Samaikyavadulu) want the state to be united then we should support the decision taken by the President," he said. In a swift reaction, Nalgonda MP Gutha Sukhender Reddy said Vivekananda Reddy was trying to act "oversmart". People of Telangana region were not innocent but had the confidence and capability to wage a struggle to realise their objective. Nellore people, in contrast, were used to lobbying politics, he remarked.
Another senior Congress leader, Gade Venkat Reddy of Seemandhra region, said though the President's approval for deletion of the clause went against the order passed by the Supreme Court, they (Congressmen) had the responsibility of supporting the decision taken by the Centre. Those (referring to Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal) who were intending to approach a court of law should first take experts' opinion on the issue, he said in a tone of advice.
