NEW DELHI: With two weeks of the monsoon session gone without many bills passed, finance minister Pranab Mukherjee reached out to the BJP brass on Friday to ensure smooth functioning of Parliament, promising the opposition that issues would be taken up while seeking support for government business.
Accompanied by parliamentary affairs minister Pawan Bansal, the finance minister met the BJP leaders in L K Advani's chamber and discussed how important legislation could be passed. The effort is in sharp contrast to previous sessions where issues like the demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee on the 2G telecom scam vitiated ties.
The disruptions during this week have worried the government as it has sought to slot bills between discussions like the unfinished debate on sports minister Ajay Maken's statement on the Commonwealth Games. Government managers point out that the government had accepted calling attention and short discussions on issues like Air India and the Sri Lankan Tamil situation. "We will discuss corruption cases as well. But we hope the opposition helps with our business," said a minister.
