Delhi police says no to Hazare for Jantar Mantar

Team Anna has been denied permission by the Delhi Police to hold its proposed indefinite dharna at Jantar Mantar here beginning August 16.
In a letter to India Against Corruption, the organisation corresponding on behalf of social activist Anna Hazare, the police on Tuesday said one group could not be allowed to usurp indefinitely the space earmarked for all citizens to exercise their democratic rights.

Team Anna had in a letter dated July 29 sought permission for the dharna.
In his reply, Additional Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) K.C. Dwivedi said: “We do not know how many people would join the dharna and in such a scenario we would not be in a position to chalk out a contingency plan.”
Later the Team Anna wrote to the Police Commissioner suggesting five other places — Boat Club, Rajghat, Ramlila Grounds, Shahidi Park near ITO and a stretch near Ashok Road — for holding the dharna.
“We have received the letter and are weighing the pros and cons before arriving at a decision,” said a police officer.
