In the continuing crackdown by the AIADMK government on land grabbing, a former DMK MLA was on Tuesday arrested for his alleged role in a case.
Ranganathan, the latest to come in the police net in connection with the land grabbing allegations, thus becomes the third arrested leader of the DMK. Earlier, former minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam and Chepauk MLA J. Anbazhagan -- close aides of Union Minister M.K. Alagiri -- were held on similar charges.
Turning up the heat on the DMK, the state government had formed a special cell to exclusively deal with the land grabbing cases.
DMK president M. Karunanidhi had earlier termed the party leaders' arrest as "vendetta politics". However, Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa denied the charge, saying the special police cells were acting on "genuine" complaints by "affected" persons with no political link.
The DMK had staged a state-wide protest on Monday, saying police were "foisting" such cases against its members.
The ongoing crackdown is the result of an electoral promise by Jayalalithaa ahead of the assembly polls that she would take action against land grabbing during the DMK rule.
