Lokpal Bill row: Thank Anna Hazare for articulating people's sentiment, says Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi:  As the government searches for a solution that will persuade Anna Hazare's hunger strike, Rahul Gandhi spoke on corruption and the Lokpal Bill in the Lok Sabha at noon.  His sister, Priyanka, was seated in the visitors' gallery.

These are some of the points Mr Gandhi made:

  • Corruption operates at every level
  • Poor carry its greatest burden
  • We cannot wish away corruption... it requires a concentrated political program supported by all levels of state...it requires a firm political will
  • Annaji has helped people to articulate their sentiment...I thank him for that.
  • It is not a matter of how present impasse will be resolved; it is a far bigger debate
  • Effective Lokpal law is only one element in battle against corruption
  • I doubt that just Lokpal law will tackle corruption
  • A set of effective laws is desired
  • Should have government funding for political parties
  • We owe it to country to work across party lines to ensure parliament functions at optimum level
  • Risk that Lokpal might itself become corrupt
  • Let us fortify the Lokpal Bill by making it a constitutional body like Election Commission
  • We must not weaken the democratic process which is lengthy and elaborate, but is inclusive and fair
  • A process that is divorced from democracy sets a dangerous precedent
  • Today it's about corruption; tomorrow you may have protests for something less universally accepted
