Bihar: Police lathicharge women, children in Nalanda; 3 suspended

The police in Bihar's Nalanda district resorted to lathi-charge to control a group of protesters, mostly women, on Wednesday. Three policemen were later suspended for their alleged brutality.

The police action came during a protest by relatives of a young woman -- Sushma, head of a village panchayat -- who has been missing since August 25. Villagers suspect an officer -- Ashok Kumar -- to be behind her disappearance

Sushma's relatives claimed that Kumar used to meet her often despite her objections and could have got her killed.

Agitated over the lack of action against Kumar, Sushma's relatives staged a protest near the police station when Patna DIG and Nalanda SP reached the spot to investigate the matter.

As the relatives continued with their protest, the policemen cane-charged them, thrashing everyone they could lay their hands on.

After Headlines Today exposed the brutality, the officials suspended three policemen.
