A HERO driver was stabbed to death by a masked carjacker yesterday as he desperately tried to save the life of his terrified female friend.
The couple were driving home when the man stopped the car and dragged the woman out.
Bleeding to death from a stab wound to the heart Harjinder Singh Burji, 32, managed to hand over the keys to his Mercedes so the knifeman would leave the woman alone.
Harjinder tried to hide the keys under his seat, but the 6ft 2in attacker, who spoke with a London accent, threatened the woman and then delivered the deadly blow.
The police said: “Before he had time to retrieve the keys, he was stabbed.
“Despite his injuries, the victim managed to retrieve the keys and hand them to the suspect who drove off.”
Emergency services were called to the scene at 1.10am but Harjinder, left bleeding in the road by the masked maniac, was pronounced dead at the scene 32 minutes later.
Four young men were arrested today over the killing.
Three suspects - a 20-year-old, a 19-year-old and a 17-year-old - are being held at an east London police station after being arrested on suspicion of murder, Scotland Yard said. The fourth man is being held for handling stolen goods
The mechanic’s shocked brother-in-law, Ricky Johal, said: “It’s just unbelievable. He had been at a party of a close friend and said he needed to give this girl a lift home. His mum and dad cannot comprehend what’s happened. He was their only son.”
Describing unmarried Harjinder as a “hard working family man”, Mr Johal added: “He was doing really well in his business and everybody wanted to be his friend.”
Property manager Mr Johal, 29, said Harjinder paid for his wedding to his sister Rasvinder three weeks ago. “We had 600 guests and it was such a happy occasion,” he said.
A local said the woman passenger knocked on her door at around 1am.
She said: “She got to the body in the middle of the road and she went to her knees crying her eyes out.”
Detectives believe he was the victim of an opportunist carjacker and are appealing for witnesses who may have seen the knifeman driving the Mercedes at speed in the early hours in Ilford, East London.
The car was found abandoned in Chingford, Essex, an hour after it was stolen.
The car
Detective Chief Inspector Phil Rickells said: “The suspect appears to have been purely motivated by stealing the car because at this early stage we can find no other obvious motive.
“As far as we can tell, the victim did not know the suspect or why he might want his car.”
