Higher education minister Bratya Basu and industry minister Partha Chatterjee met governor M.K. Narayanan on Wednesday and discussed ways to end “anarchy in education”.
This was the second meeting in two days the ministers held with the governor to discuss ways to transform the education system.
“We all know there is anarchy in education. Some people are deliberately trying to create problems. We have discussed these issues with the governor and noted down his suggestions,” Chatterjee said after Wednesday’s two-hour meeting at Raj Bhavan.
“Chief minister Mamata Banerjee will be informed about the outcome of today’s meeting.”
On Tuesday, the trio had discussed the draft amendments to the acts governing the 16 state universities, aimed at ensuring that they are run by academicians.
An official in the higher education department said the government might take the ordinance route to introduce the amendments to avoid delay. The next Assembly session is scheduled for December.
“There is a need to bring about radical changes in the governance of academic institutions. Some of the thrust areas are the recruitment of vice-chancellors and teachers and constitution of the policy-making bodies.
The Presidency University Act, too, might be amended to endorse the functioning of the mentor group.
