Stephen’s name misuse slur on Dikshit

New Delhi, Sept. 7: The principal of St. Stephen’s College has sent Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit’s son and Congress MP Sandeep a legal notice for “misusing” the institute’s name to create an alumni body.
Sandeep, a former student who has been locked in another dispute with principal Valson Thampu, and six others have been served the “cease and desist” notices for filing an affidavit before the registrar of societies to create the “St. Stephen’s College Alumni Association”.

Thampu has accused the East Delhi MP and the others of misrepresentation. “They have filed a false affidavit that there is no society in the name of St. Stephen’s. This is wrong. In fact, St. Stephen’s College itself is registered as a society under the societies registration act.”
In the notice, Thampu has asked the seven persons to remove “St. Stephen’s” from the name of their proposed alumni society. “In my notice, I have given them seven days’ time to comply. If they do not respect the notice, I will take further legal action,” he said today.
The principal said filing false affidavits was a crime under Section 193 of the IPC, punishable with imprisonment up to three years and fines. Sandeep was not available for comment despite repeated attempts.
Thampu said he had also filed a complaint with the Registrar of Societies but claimed there was no response so far. “No action has been taken though I filed the complaint on August 3. The proposed society wants to raise money in the name of the institute without any accountability. I cannot allow it to happen.”
Thampu added that the college had an existing alumni association but it was not a registered society.
This isn’t the first row involving Sandeep and Thampu. The MP was on the college’s board of governors, which has slots for ex-students, but was dropped when the body was reconstituted earlier this year. The exclusion followed claims by Thampu that Sandeep had not attended most meetings of the board.
