Eye on Tata, vendors hope for a payback

KOLKATA: The Calcutta high court verdict on Wednesday has put the vendors for the Tata Nano project in Singur in bigger trouble. Very few of them have filed a writ petition in high court in the same line as Tata Motors but after the verdict, most of them will be happy if they simply get the 'reimbursement' of the money they spent on the Singur land before the Tatas moved out to Sanand.

The joint petition of the vendors will be heard by Calcutta high court after the Pujas . Vendors that do not have any lease agreement for the land are looking at Tata Motors for the future course of action . Some 26 vendors of the 54 vendors had taken possession of the land in Singur, each having paid an average premium of 20 lakh per acre. The vendor park was allotted 257 acres of the 997-acre plot.

The total amount paid by the vendors is close to 55 crore. However, the vendors have earlier indicated that they spent close to 80 crore for developing the land.

S Kapoor, chairman of Sona Kayo Steering, one of the key vendors of Tata Motors , told TOI that they are interested only in the compensation . The firm has around 5 acres in Singur. "I have to look into the order first. The land is of no use to us. If we get back the money we spent that would be enough. We do not want any thing more," he said. Director of Exide, P K Kataky, and Lumax managing director D K Jain agreed with Kapoor. "We are only concerned about compensation ," Jain said.

Lumax had around 10 acres in Singur. It was one of the few vendors that had almost finished construction work at the site. The managing director of another engineering component manufacturer was hopeful that the 'possession letter' of the land and correspondence with WBIDC would be proof enough to get compensation for the land they have in Singur . "Yes, our only concern is compensation. People say that we do not have a lease agreement . But vendors have the possession letter and a series of correspondence with WBIDC. It has a legal validity as well," he pointed out.

COO of Gabriel India, A Walia, made it clear that they will follow Tata Motors' lead. "We got into Singur because of Tata Motors so we shall go by them," he said. Behr India COO Sunil Kaul, too, has same opinion. "We are doing business worth Rs 2,000 crore with Tata Motors. Our investment in Singur is peanuts in comparison to this and it not our priority now. We shall follow Tata Motors," he said.
