Opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) has come out in support of Parliament attack case convict Afzal Guru. The party said it would support the resolution seeking clemency for Guru inJammu and Kashmir Assembly
"We will support resolution on clemency for Afzal," PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti told Headlines Today, adding, the PDP has been demanding clemency for Guru right from the time his death sentence was announced.
Mufti said this after a legislature party meeting in Srinagar.
The Supreme Court had given death to Guru for conspiracy in the 2001 attack. But his mercy petition has been pending since 2004. The BJP has been demanding that Afzal be hanged without delay.
But Mufti said, "PDP supports clemency for Afzal Guru."
Reservations have been expressed in several quarters about the possible impact of his hanging on the situation in the Kashmir valley. Chief Kashmir interlocutor Dilip Padgaonkar had also supported clemency for Afzal.
