Lucknow: A gangster carrying a reward of Rs. 50,000 for his capture was gunned down in Uttar Pradesh's Allahabad district on Wednesday, police said.
Sanjay Yadav, wanted in 14 criminal cases, including murder and abduction, was shot dead during a gun battle with the Special Task Force (STF) and the district police in Naini area. However, his accomplice managed to escape.
Yadav, 38, was an active member of Munna Bajrangi gang, and had cases against him in police stations of Varanasi and Allahabad, said a statement issued by the office of the director general of police here.
"Yadav was also involved in looting a carbine from a constable," it added.
According to police Inspector Ajai Seth, acting on a tip-off, Special Task Force (STF) sleuths intercepted Yadav and his aide, who were on a motorcycle.
"They did not stop, and started firing indiscriminately at the police," Seth told reporters in Allahabad, 200 km from here.
"While Yadav was killed in the retaliatory firing, his associate fled," he said.
Two firearms and several cartridges were also recovered.
According to police, Yadav was a native of Varanasi district.
