Water supply to Thiruvananthapuram restored

Thiruvananthapuram:  After two days of uncertainty, the water supply to the city was restored on Tuesday. The distribution of water was badly hit when a pipe burst near Vazhayila here. The concrete pipe was replaced with a mild steel pipe on Tuesday.

The work was completed by around 2 pm. The water supply was resumed fully by evening.

Meanwhile, the Kerala Water Authority authorities said that the city dwellers would have to cope with yet another water disruption on Saturday. Because, two more pipes, linked to the pipe that burst, too would be replaced with mild steel pipes on the day.

"The condition of the two pipes is not alarming. But we have decided to replace them as a precautionary measure since the people demanded it,'' said Kerala Water Authority Executive Engineer George Mathew. He urged the people to be prepared for the day with enough storage of water.

The residents of Vazhayila had staged a protest and stalled the restoration works alleging that two pipes were in very bad condition and would burst any time.

They feared that if the pipes burst, the damage it might cause would be severe compared to the pipe-burst on Sunday.  As many as three houses in the locality were damaged, causing huge loss, after water gushed out with humongous force from the leakage.
