New Delhi: Nearly a lakh private chemist shops in Delhi, Haryana and Rajasthan will remain closed today, especially those around hospitals.
Government medicine shops will, however, be open.
The private chemist shops are opposing a recent government notice that 16 life-saving drugs will be sold only through government hospitals. There are also some other restrictions on the sale of 74 other medicines.
The government claims the steps are needed to check the overuse of antibiotics, leading to development of multi-drug resistant bacteria.
The chemists' association is also staging a protest at Jantar Mantar today.
