New Delhi: A youth employed by a security agency to help a bank deposit money in its ATMs allegedly decamped with at least Rs. 24 lakh after illegally opening the machines using code number provided to him and another employee, police said on Monday.
The incident was reported from Outer Delhi's Mongolpuri area and the accused has been identified as Deepak Rana, employed by Scientific Management Security Agency which has secured a contract from Kotak Mahindra to help it fill its ATM counters.
Rana and another employee Pradeep used to fill 14 ATMs in Mongolpuri area and were given separate codes by the bank to open the ATMs.
"Only after putting the two codes or passwords, one can open the ATM. Rana managed to get the password provided to Pradeep," a senior police official said.
Last evening, the official said, Rana went to the ATM in Pushpanjali Enclave and allegedly opened the ATM, emptied it and put a board that the machine was out of order.
"The fraud came to light after the security guard posted at the ATM informed bank officials that the machine needed repair. The officials reached the spot and found the ATM functional.
However, they discovered that there was no money in it. The guard told them that Rana had come to the ATM," the official said.
Following inspection at around six ATMs, it was found that at least Rs. 24 lakh was missing.
Attempts were made to contact Rana over phone but he did not respond and did not report for duty Monday morning.
A case has been registered and efforts are on to nab him, the official said.
