Cops discuss Naxal threat with heads of Pune colleges

Pune:  The city police have alerted colleges in the city about Naxalite sleeper cells trying to spread their wings on campuses in a bid to attract students to their ideology.

In a recent meeting of principals and directors of various colleges and management institutes, the police appealed to college administrations to remain alert to the threat. Commissioner of Police Meeran Chadha Borwankar presided over the meeting. Nearly 40 college principals and directors of various institutes and officials of various education institutes took part in the meeting.

Joint Commissioner of Police Sanjivkumar Singhal also appealed to the college authorities that they should help the police by doing research on various subjects for the betterment of society. College authorities assured the police that they would cooperate with them to do extensive research on issues related to the police department, like traffic, imparting of training related to the law to the police department, the diet of police personnel and medical check-ups, besides enlightening people and students about the day-to-day police functioning.

Besides the Naxalite threat, the police also discussed the registration of foreigners, as a number of students from abroad come to the city for education. "It has been seen that there are many Naxalite organisations which are trying to attract students by spreading their ideology and we have appealed to college authorities to be vigilant. The college authorities were also provided information on how the Special Branch's foreign citizens registration cell functions," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Branch) Makarand Ranade said.


The officer said the care colleges should take while admitting foreigners was discussed. "We also informed the college authorities what kind of documents they should check while giving admission to foreign students," Ranade said. "The motive behind the meeting was to strengthen the relations between students and the police department."
