Implement uniform syllabus immediately, Supreme Court tells Tamil Nadu govt

Chennai:  In a setback for Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, the Supreme Court today rejected the state's plea to postpone the implementation of the Uniform System of School Education.

The state government wanted to postpone the implementation of the DMK-launched scheme by a year. The court, however, directed it to implement the scheme immediately.

The uniform system was brought in by the earlier DMK government. On assuming office in May this year, J Jayalalithaa brought an amendment to the law deferring the system for a year. This was done as she was believed to have found the text books under the system to be full of praise of M Karunanidhi.

"Tamil Nadu government will immediately implement the uniform syllabus," the Chief Minister said reacting to the court order. This, Jayalalithaa's political rival and DMK patriarch Karunanidhi said, is a victory for his party.

"Let us celebrate the victory for uniform syllabus. It's a big lesson for the AIADMK. People of Tamil Nadu expect Jayalalithaa to change her approach," he said.

Earlier, the High Court had quashed the amendment and directed the state to implement the system in the current academic year. It also asked the government to remove portions, which it found not suitable.

Jayalalithaa then moved the Supreme Court saying her government needed time to change the syllabus.
