HYDERABAD: Taking the YS Jaganmohan Reddy loyalist Congress MLAs head on, chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president Botsa Satyanarayana want Speaker Nadendla Manohar to accept the resignations submitted by the 29 legislators provided they are in order.
"This is the decision taken by the two leaders and the same has been conveyed to the Speaker who is currently camping in his native Tenali town in Guntur district. This way, the lingering treat being posed by the Jagan loyalist MLAs will be eliminated once and for all. However, this is possible only if the resignations submitted by them are in the prescribed format," said government sources.
Accordingly, the strategy to neutralise the Jagan loyalists within the ruling party is that the Speaker would open the sealed covers the moment Manohar returns to the state capital. "If needed, he will direct each of the 29 MLAs to meet him personally to explain their mind on the resignations. If everything is in order, all the resignations would be immediately accepted," said the sources.
The sources claimed that Kiran Kumar is not inclined to negotiate with the MLAs who are sailing with Jagan. "Five MLAs are in touch with the chief minister and have placed their demands for returning to the party fold. But CM is not willing to oblige them by conceding to their demands," said a close aide of the chief minister.
Senior ministers Anam Ramnarayna Reddy, Raghuveera Reddy, Galla Aruna and Ramreddy Venkata Reddy are monitoring the situation and entrusted with the task of ensuring that more Congress MLAs do not join in the resignation drama. "In the present situation, even if 60 Congress MLAs switch over to the Jagan camp, there would be no threat to the Kiran Kumar government as the arithmetic in the state assembly is in favour of the Congress," said constitutional expert and high court advocate J Ravishankar.
What has come as a shot in the arm of the CM camp was the rejection by the Supreme Court on Wednesday the plea by Jagan that the CBI probe launched into his assets was a political witch-hunt and should be stopped. "With the CBI getting a free run to complete its comprehensive probe into Jagan's assets, any plans by more ruling party MLAs to show their solidarity with the YSR's son has got stymied, said Congress sources.
"We are not going to make any efforts to lure the pro-Jagan MLAs. They have decided to go against the Congress. As a result, there is no scope for any more talks with them. If the Speaker accepts their resignations, we will fight the by-elections from a position of strength and win most of the seats," Botsa told TOI.
However, one factor that may not make it that easy for the Speaker to accept the resignations is the pending resignation letters submitted by Telugu Desam party rebel MLA Nagam Janardhan Reddy and his associates K Hareeswar Reddy and Jogu Ramanna.
"Although the Speaker's decision cannot be challenged in the court, it may not be that easy for him to claim that the resignations of the 29 Congress MLAs were not made under emotional stress, the grounds on which he had rejected the over 101 resignations that the MLAs from the Telangana region had submitted earlier," said the sources.
