Uttar Pradesh: Ghagra River breaches embankment

Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh:  The Ghaghra River has breached its embankment along the Charasi village in Barabanki. The local administration says that the breach is 20 metres wide and fear that it could further widen over the next few days.

However, local reports suggest that the breach is more than 200 metres wide.

Over the next 24 hours more than 40 villages in the Colonelganj Tehsil of Gonda and the Sidhauli Dauspur Tehsil of Barabanki are likely to the affected by floods.

The district administration has already asked people to evacuate these villages and the Provincial armed constabulary (PAC) too has been deployed to help with the evacuation.

Last year and in 2008 the Ghaghra had breached its embankment along the 52 km stretch.
