Actor Amitabh Bachchan on Sunday visited estranged friend and Rajya Sabha MP Amar Singh at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences where he is undergoing treatment.
Mr. Singh, 55, who was in judicial custody for his alleged involvement in the cash-for-votes scandal during the July 2008 trust vote in Parliament, is on interim bail till September 19. He was brought from Tihar jail and admitted in a private ward at the AIIMS on September 12 after he complained of ill-health.
According to sources in Mr. Singh's office, Mr. Bachchan, accompanied by daughter Shweta, visited the former Samajwadi Party general secretary at the AIIMS in the afternoon. He was with Mr. Singh for about five minutes after which he spent a long time talking to his wife. Mr. Bachchan was in the hospital for over 90 minutes. The actor is in New Delhi to attend a function.
The relationship between the Bachchans and Mr. Singh had come under strain after the latter spoke publicly against Mr. Bachchan's wife and former Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan for not quitting the party when he was “thrown out.”
He also resented the fact that Ms. Bachchan was offered a re-nomination to the Rajya Sabha by party chief Mulayam Singh, while he remained out.
Ms. Bachchan subsequently declined Mr. Mulayam Singh's offer but things have not been the same between the Bachchans and Mr. Singh since.
Last Thursday, actor and Rampur MP Jayaprada hit out at Mr. Singh's political friends and celebrities and wondered where they were now.
