Protest over Tamil Nadu's nuclear plant: Narayanaswamy to meet Jayalalithaa today

Koodankulam:  In Koodankulam, the protests over the new nuclear plant that's meant to swing into business next month have become a local spectacle. A hundred people have been on a hunger fast for 10 days.  Every day, a few hundred more shout slogans at the gates of the plant.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has asked the Prime Minister to temporarily stop work at the plant till villagers are reassured of its safety.  The government of India has certified that the plant meets international safety standards.  It is designed to withstand a tsunami, for example.  Yet, local opposition to the plant has been growing.  The two nuclear reactors under construction are expected to alleviate the state's considerable power problems.

Yesterday, senior minister V Narayanaswamy sent by the PM to engage with residents was shouted at till he vowed, "People's safety first.  Power later."  Mr Narayanaswamy will brief the PM on the crisis when he returns to Delhi.  Today, he will also meet Ms Jayalalithaa in Chennai.
